Jamaica Bay Avian Studies

Biological surveys to aid wildlife management

landfill restoration and avian management

Project Details

Great Ecology provided avian management and avian habitat studies at the Pennsylvania and Fountain Avenue Landfills on Jamaica Bay for the New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP). Great Ecology performed one of the largest data collections of avian habitat in the Bay as part of a wildlife management strategy to deter migratory bird species from nesting on the revegetated, capped landfills. Great Ecology provided daily dawn-to-dusk surveys of bird and wildlife activity throughout the year and conducted hazing activities to discourage bird use of the siteā€”in order to comply with the FAA that was seeking to prevent bird strike at the nearby JFK International Airport.
