Great Ecology played two roles on this project. As the ecological consultants we conducted ecological risk assessment for GATX and of a 440-acre site contaminated by heavy metals in Northwestern Staten Island. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation required a Screening Level Ecological Risk Assessment (SLERA) to meet regulatory guidelines. The SLERA also helped us develop soil remediation levels for lead associated with petroleum aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the freshwater wetlands. Great Ecology applied our extensive knowledge of the local habitat with ecological modeling to negotiate reduced cleanup levels.
As the mitigation consultants, we conducted a comprehensive evaluation of transforming the site into a wetland mitigation bank for a private client. The mitigation analysis involved developing a financial model, pro forma, and site development plans.
