Employee Spotlight: Kat VanDeusen
Author: Emily Searles
Our employee spotlight feature series continues this month with Senior Ecologist Kat VanDeusen! Kat is an environmental scientist with over 20 years of professional experience across the United States and has been with Great Ecology since November 2022. Kat holds a bachelor’s in environmental science from Fairleigh Dickenson University and has completed many continuing education courses in wetland creation and biotechnology applications for ecological engineering.
Most of Kat’s career has been on the eastern seaboard working on ecological and phytoremediation projects primarily in the New York City Metropolitan Area. Kat specializes in the evaluation and design of combined remediation and restoration solutions for sites with ecologically sensitive natural resources using phytoremediation. At Great Ecology, Kat has developed strategies for resource damage site restoration projects, as well as prepared technical reports for all phases of environmental investigation and assessment. She explained that to her, “the most important part of creating successful and sustainable ecological solutions is creating holistic designs that mimic nature.”
Kat was honored with an award for her phytoremediation work in 2014 by the American Academy of Environmental Engineers & Scientists and gave a presentation titled Removing Forever Chemicals with Phytoremediation, Stormwater Bioretention for the 2023 Storm Water Awareness Week. Her other industry associations include the Society of Women Environmental Professionals and the Brownfield Coalition of the Northeast.
Kat’s love of the environment extends beyond work, as she volunteers with San Diego Canyonlands, San Diego River Conservancy, and San Diego Coastkeeper. Her love of the ocean has taken her to surf in many destinations, including sunny San Diego where she moved in 2020. Surfing isn’t the only sport that holds a special place in Kat’s heart, though. She has played many extreme and professional sports including pro women’s football for the New York Sharks.
