Associate Ecologist & GIS Specialist

Quin Smith, M.E.S.M.

Quin is an environmental scientist who specializes in GIS analysis and mapping, conservation planning, and Southern California ecosystems. He previously worked for the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station Mitigation Monitoring Program performing a wide array of field, lab, and GIS-related tasks. He also spent two field seasons researching the attractiveness of common ornamental plants to insect pollinators under UC Agriculture and Natural Resources.
Quin graduated from the Bren School at UC Santa Barbara with a Master of Environmental Science and Management (MESM). During his master’s program, he specialized in Conservation Planning with a focus in Eco-Entrepreneurship. As the lead GIS analyst and data manager for his group thesis, he led environmental modeling efforts to predict post-fire debris flow likelihood and magnitude using spatially explicit datasets and models developed by USGS.
Quin has implemented spatial modeling and policy analysis to collaborate on two sea level rise risk assessments of lagoon ecosystems, an ecological impact evaluation of desalination operations, and a widescale vegetation inventory for Palomar College Arboretum. He has also volunteered his time to restore habitat in San Elijo Lagoon, collect fish counts for the California Fish and Wildlife, and nurture white abalone specimens at NOAA Southwest Fisheries Science Center.
