World Water Week

Author: Ryan Morrison
Happy National Water Week!
Did you know that all of the water that is present on the globe today is all of the water that ever existed? Even though the amount of water is constant, it is ever-changing in its form. It exists as a gas (vapor), liquid (water), or solid (ice) in colder temperatures. Water changes forms by the process of evaporation, sublimation, transpiration, precipitation, or condensation.
We at Great Ecology understand the important role water has in all facets of life! This global resource plays a pivotal role in our restoration design and success. Our West Pond Living Shoreline project highlights a sustainable living shoreline design guided by local hydrology. This coastal salt marsh habitat is strategically sited so that the daily tidal inundations periodically flood the Low and High Marsh appropriately. In addition to this, the project team designed a pilot series of integrated and overlapping erosion control structures (coir logs, shell-bag breakwaters, and tree vanes) that protect the marsh from the highly dynamic system that exists from wind and wave action.
Even though water is so essential to life, many communities face severe water shortages that are only exacerbated by the impacts of climate change. Altered rain patterns that can result in flooding or unusually arid conditions as well as severity of storm events that impact water availability and quality are only a handful of examples as to how the changing climate is impacting water security around the globe. At Great Ecology, we’ve worked on multiple projects that are designed to be drought-resilient, offer stormwater retention and treatment during precipitation events, and that attenuate against storm surges. Some of our projects include Central Park (Stapleton Open Spaces), La Lomita Park, and New Stapleton Waterfront
As we celebrate World Water Week, let's do our part in conserving water, supporting green and blue initiatives that protect this global this global resource and build a more sustainable future for all!
