Great Ecology supported Matrix New World Engineering with bird deterrence services in anticipation of vegetation clearing and construction activities associated with the development of a Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Terminal in Louisiana. In coordination with the client Great Ecology implemented components of the Migratory Bird Nesting Impact Mitigation Plan to minimize potential impacts to colonial and migratory bird species during the breeding season, in accordance with their Louisiana Department of Energy and Natural Resources (LDENR), U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) regulatory permits.
Great Ecology biologists conducted pre-clearing field visits to identify active nests within regulated buffer distances of the proposed site. If nests were detected, buffers and nest monitoring protocols were established in accordance with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries requirements. Great Ecology also implemented an adaptive hazing and deterrence program targeting high-probability nesting areas using auditory and visual devices, such as decoys, pyrotechnics, and propane canons to discourage nesting birds. All fieldwork was conducted in alignment with state and federal guidance to ensure that vegetation clearing avoided take of protected bird species while facilitating project timelines.
